I finished this tutorial and have learned lots of drawing dog and furr. It’s a great way to get better in dogs, their noses and mouth. Thank you Sue for another wonderful lesson.

Thanks so much Sue, as always your tuition is excellent, well paced and easy to follow. This is a great tutorial for learning how to pastel thick fur using pastel sticks and pencils. There is lots of guidance about tinting with pencils to mix exactly the right colours and it’s useful to have options to use sticks or pans for the background. There are also really good tips on doing white fur and for getting it to lie over the red-brown fur too. Sue gives you so many little tips as you work through the video from telling you how to sharpen your pencil to the way to turn it to keep it sharp, and how to hold your pastels to achieve a smooth application. Altogether an enjoyable and informative tutorial – and a really adorable dog to pastel!

Having just completed my second dog portrait under Sue’s tuition, online through Zoom, I have no hesitation in recommending her courses to anyone from beginner to those more experienced but wishing to be challenged. I would never have attempted many of the subjects we have tackled during the months of lockdown but, with Sue’s guidance and encouragement, I can see how I and my fellow students have blossomed. This is mainly due to how Sue breaks down each subject, backed up with pdf files giving information on materials in advance, then followed later with a YouTube video which can be watched at your own pace. Sue’s enthusiasm makes these courses addictive, I just can’t wait for the next challenge.

I recommend Sue Kerrigan-Harris tutorials to anyone wanting to learn how to use soft pastels. She explains what she is doing and demonstrates techniques. Being able to join live is brilliant but if you can’t it doesn’t matter as you have the links to recordings of the live sessions which you can access any time you want to (sometimes this is better as you can stop and start and rewind if you need to).
I bought this tutorial with some trepidation as I have never drawn a dog before and I struggle with backgrounds – was I being too ambitious? I have surprised myself with the picture that I have completed and have learnt loads.
Sue is really approachable and supportive and and enormous help on your art journey.

Absolutely recommended Sue’s tutorials. Due to living in Australia and the time difference, l am not able to join the Zoom sessions. However the sessions are recorded and a link emailed so am able to replay full tutorial and work at my own pace. Not being in UK is definitely not a drawback. Sue is an excellent instructor, thorough, clear, approachable, and she works in real time. Great backup support on IT or art questions. Completely new to pastels 6 weeks ago and already producing better artwork than l thought possible. Be warned though…it is addictive.

Thoroughly enjoyed the experience with Sue. Her pace is great to follow, even for beginners like me. I’ve learned so much while creating my first dog portrait and have had positive feedback from friends and family. Thanks Sue
