Debbie Heeley – Lockdown Success!

by | May 5, 2021

Finding Sue’s tutorials has been one of the few highlights of COVID and lockdown.  I live in France and now through the wonders of internet I can do regular classes and even be part of a group of fellow art lovers.

The encouragement from both Sue and her students has been wonderful. So besides amazing soothing calm tuition there is the bonus of the group. Sue grades her tutorials depending on your experience.

My first tutorial I later realized was intermediate lol for my beginner capabilities. Still managed it and that is down to Sue not my ability. I now realize the grading is more about your patience level not your ability.

With experience I am learning the patience needed. I have learnt to look for the colours which lift an image and make such a difference. The first tutorial I found myself ‘talking’ to the screen each time Sue added a bit more, things I couldn’t see and didn’t think were even needed.

Yep you are right Sue, and so yes I learnt to listen too.

I learnt how to sharpen my pencils and with sandpaper to get that useful chisel shape. I learnt not to swear(as much) when the end breaks off as that square end gives a good sharp edge again and I have collected all the little bits as they can still be used!  I have also learnt to tickle the paper – altering the pressure with the pencil as well as gentle little circles i.e. tickling.

Finally through Sue I discovered pan pastels which I had never heard of before so looking forward to the tutorial this month. Thank you

These are some of my attempts before tuition.
