Passion for Pastels

I’m a little bit (a lot!) passionate about helping you learn soft pastel and I think about learning a little differently to most online art tutors because I’m a specialist teacher using advanced learning techniques.

Most tutors only have one way to teach you:

Watch me, now you do the same and then wonder why you can’t do it.

Ugh, it reminds me of that sick stomach 🤢 feeling whilst learning at school! I was not top of the class, as you may have already gathered.

In conversation with my friend Wendy she described learning art as an impossible task.  A lot of people say things like this:

‘I couldn’t draw at school, my teacher threw my art in the bin!’
‘I can’t even draw stick men’

OR in other cases their school teachers said:

‘Your drawings are not art because they are too realistic!”
‘Stop drawing horses, that’s not what art is about!’

Shock horror….!!

It’s terrible isn’t it… It’s no wonder my friend thought she couldn’t do art and she didn’t have years to learn new skills but she wanted to have fun, not hard work.

As I’m someone who has always struggled with learning I do things differently, yep, I really do!  That’s why I teach you using the most effective way to learn, a way that your brain will love and actually gives your brain a boost, like vitamins!

Does that sound exciting?  It really is, and it is super effective for everyone, not just those who struggle.

You see, I’m desperately passionate about teaching and learning (and art!).  I’ve spent the last 20 years teaching this way, in fact I used to be a teacher. But not a normal teacher (I tried that and failed – i didn’t understand what they were teaching me go figure!)

So I learnt a new method and when I was teaching kids who had struggled with traditional learning methods… it worked!!

That’s me and my friend Wendy, who said she couldn’t even draw a stick man. In fact that is the actual day she told me she couldn’t draw!

And above is Wendy with the paintings she’s done since. Aren’t they fabulous!!

I’ve learned a LOT about teaching and how to help people (just like you and Wendy) learn how to pastel.

Now I’m online with my tutorials, I can teach you too. You don’t have to live in my village or travel to get here – isn’t that great! Lots of my students say it feels like I’m in the room with them and we learn together!

My approach to learning puts the odds back in your favour and stops you thinking that art is something you’ll never be able to do.

You learn faster, so you remember more, you enjoy yourself, because art is fun and your confidence grows.

This is brilliant for a few reasons:

#1 – you feel energised to learn

#2 – You feel supported

#3 – You feel your confidence growing

#4 – You are proud of your work

#5 – You get wonderful compliments about your new found ‘talent’

You feel energised to learn and you feel supported and confident, you make new like-minded friends and above all you enjoy your new found hobby.

If all of this sounds like it’s your cup of tea, then you’re in the right place and you’re gonna love what I’ve got coming up.

If you’re anything like me, art has not come naturally to you, you might have dabbled here and there and often wondered if you’d be any good but didn’t really know how to start or have the time to try.

You should have seen my paint DISASTERS.  I really did try hard.

When I showed my art I got such negative comments, I’d give up… for years!

But then things changed.

Enter the ‘Curious Cat’ mentality

Imagine you’re a cat. A curious one. You know the type.

(Bare with me…)

Hold on to that curious feeling…

Curiosity give you lots of questions.. Why, how, what, where, when…

And all the negative feelings melt away. Like:

I’m no good, I can’t do this, I’ll never improve [rips artwork in half and tosses it in the bin]

AND 2 other thing happened:

I started learning differently.

Someone believed in me.

I started teaching myself how I taught the kids who were struggling and my sister became my cheerleader, the person who believed in me. (I’ll be your cheerleader – you’ll find out about that in my top tips emails)

Both of these combined were so powerful….. Remember the brain vitamins I spoke about above?

And my art skills grew and grew and I became everything I wanted, a new hobby, a new career.

Because once I understood this I made a BIG shift and got better results.

There’s always an AUDIBLE gasp…

When I told over 1000 people something outrageous… (it was actually 1223 people in a soft pastel challenge Facebook group )

There was a (virtual) sharp intake of breath right after I had the audacity to say:

“I can teach you how to pastel a Bengal cat”

And then they get the giggles of disbelief

And i know It’s controversial.

I mean, complete beginners can’t do that, can they?

But if you take one piece of advice from me, then I want it to be this:

Learn in a multi sensory way and your sensory systems become more developed and higher functioning, you’ll retain more information, more easily in a shorter time frame. Brain vitamins!

(And by learning from me, you’ll learn the right way, first time, (and not have to undo bad habits).

Sounds impossible doesn’t it. I get that.

We have 5 senses but we will focus on 3:

visual, auditory and kinaesthetic.

When I teach you I include all 3 of these senses so you experience the learning not only by watching but by listening, not just by listening to my voice, but by being aware of what you need to listen to and not only that I’ll tap into your third sense, touch.

Wendy who I told you about earlier did a great little video review speaking about her art journey with me. Take a look. Remember, Wendy was the lady who said she couldn’t even draw a stick figure!

Every week I get messages from my students saying things like:

‘I can see I have improved a lot and have gained confidence to try my hand at animal portraits without a tutorial.I have automatically imbibed many of the techniques that you use in your tutorials and those techniques come spontaneously to me, almost like a habit. Thanks to you I have gained a lot of confidence’. – Suzie Joseph

‘Your group and your tutorials are so conducive to learning. You have opened up a whole new art world for me’. Carol Smith

‘I have thoroughly enjoyed learning with Sue’s tutorials. Her pace is great to follow, even for beginners like me. I’ve learned so much while creating my first dog portrait and have had positive feedback from friends and family. Thanks Sue’ Gill K
