I loved this tutorial! I had only been pastel painting for a few months when I decided to do this leopard, but I had experience with other mediums. Still, pastels have been very challenging. Sue’s tutorial made learning these new techniques a lot easier, and I’m very pleased with the end result.

I started pastelling in March 2019, thanks to Covid-19 shielding. I had sketched and dabbled in acrylics and watercolours, on and off, over the years, but never with much success. Then I saw Sue’s classes on facebook, and decided to try pastels. Sue’s online classes are so comprehensive, and you can dip in and out of her videos at your leisure, covering everything you need to know, from sharpening a pastel pencil to selecting the right paper and pastels, how to layer, blend, add detail and correct mistakes. She takes you through each painting step by step in her videos, explaining what she is doing and why. There is no pressure, and Sue is always there to answer any questions either on her Facebook page Pastel for Beginners and Beyond, or during her weekly zoom Art Chat. I chose to review the Snow Leopard for 2 reasons. Firstly I love cats, of all shapes and sizes. But also because of the success I achieved in following this tutorial. The painting I did is now framed and hanging in my husbands office. Since then, I have done many of Sue’s tutorials covering various animals and landscapes, and my paintings improve after each course. My next challenge will be portraits!
